Molding Plane Basics

Hi Folks,

This evening I finished an article for my website called “Molding Plane Basics”. This article is in response to the numerous requests I have received from readers and customers asking for advice on where to start with molding planes and asking for my recommendations for a good starter set. In this article I try to explain some basic types of planes and give some advice what to look for in a molding plane. I included a number of photos of the molding planes I use to illustrate some points. I have also included links to some YouTube videos I shot a while back showing some of these molding planes in use in my shop. As I mention in the article, I am by no means an expert- I have been using, repairing, and making molding planes on a casual basis for about ten years. As always, I welcome your comments, questions, criticisms, and corrections.

Thanks for reading!

Lots of New Old Tools For Sale Today

Greetings! I spent most of last week at a big antique tool show and auction in Nashua, NH. It was a blast- I got to see a lot of spectacular tools, both old and new. Sales in the tailgate sale were brisk and the auction prices were strong, indicating a strong market for tools. The highlight of the show was the 18th Century Cesar Chelor crown molder that sold for $28,600. It’s always fun to watch a big ticket item like this sell at auction. My find of the show was a Harvey W. Peace 8in. No. 50 brass back open-handle backsaw. I’ve been looking for an example of the No. 50 for years and they don’t get ant better than this one. I was very happy to find it.

I brought home a load of good tools, many of which will be appearing here over the next few months. I added about 50 tools to my For Sale page today. This update includes some good Stanley stuff, some molding planes, and lots of other fun stuff. As always, if you would like to purchase a tool or have any questions or comments please contact me.

Thanks for reading! Have a nice Easter weekend.

No. 50 brass back open-handle backsaw. I’ve been looking for an example of the No. 50 for ten years and they don’t get ant better than this one. I was very happy to find it.

Added 50+ New Old Tools For Sale

Spring is here in New England and tool season is heating up. I have added more than 50 fresh tools to my For Sale page today. This includes a lot of good user tools- bench planes, wooden planes, transitionals, lots of molding planes, and some really nice carving tools. I anticipate at least two more updates this month so keep an eye out for email alerts. As always, if you would like to buy an item, or if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

In my last update I mentioned that I have had a number of requests from readers for more information on getting started with molding planes. I’m putting the finishing touches on a first article on molding plane basics that I hope will help answer some of these questions. I snapped some photos and shot some video of some of my molding planes in use to help illustrate some points. I hope to publish this sometime in the next week or so.

That’s it.. Thanks for reading!
