Extra-Long Marples 1 1/2in Wide Tang Paring Chisel.
This is a huge 16+inch long paring chisel with wide bevels along the blade. It's more a short sword than an edge tool. If you want a wide paring chisel to use it's vital to look at the back. A wide chisel with significant pitting that affects the bevel area is a bear to fix. having said that, here's my honest opinion of the back. The first 5/8in is clean. After that there is the slightest pitting or discoloration up until the 1 1/2in mark. This is really nothing to worry about and should work out as you grind/hone during use. After the 1 1/2in mark there is more moderate pitting, and a few small bad patches. Still, 1 1/2in of really decent blade should last you several decades if this is a dedicated paring chisel. It's probably not a three generation tool, but it's not priced as such. the handle is in great shape.
$35 This Item Has Been Sold

Extra-Long Marples 1 1/4in Wide Tang Paring Chisel.
This is a long 14+inch long paring chisel with wide bevels along the blade. This is a perfectly usable paring chisel. If you want a wide paring chisel to use it's vital to look at the back. A wide chisel with significant pitting that affects the bevel area is a bear to fix. having said that, here's my honest opinion of the back. It's very clean. There is literally one tiny pit 3in in back of the bevel. Otherwise it's clean. That's extraordinary considering hoe much sheer real estate there is. The bevel is cleanly ground, but not all the way to an edge. It looks almost like it has its factory edge on it. The handle, unfortunately, has a repaired crack and some tiny chips right at the end. Some sandpaper and a coat of shellac will go a long way to improving its feel in the hand. It's going to be an excellent working paring chisel with a small bit of honing.

Extra-Long I. Sorby 1 1/4in Wide Tang Paring Chisel.
This is a long 15+inch long boxwood-handled paring chisel with wide bevels along the blade. This is a perfectly usable paring chisel. If you want a wide paring chisel to use it's vital to look at the back. A wide chisel with significant pitting that affects the bevel area is a bear to fix. Having said that, here's my honest opinion of the back. The first 1.5inches are very clean wit no pitting. After that there is some moderate pitting for a half inch or so, then more clean blade. That first 1./5inches is a lot of met to work with, many years if it's used as a dedicated paring chisel. The boxwood handle has a tight, small check but is otherwise fine. It's going to be an excellent working paring chisel with a small bit of honing.

This is an early, Pre-Stanley 2101. It has unusual jaws I haven't seen on a Yankee before, but work just fine. Boxed Set of Six Cooks Patent Auger Bits.
Cook's patent bits are getting downright rare to find these days, especially in excellent condition like these. Cook's bits do things no other bits can. Their backward-swept curved spurs allow them to enter the wood at an angle, bore end grain easily, and enlarge an existing hole. These are things that Jennings and Irwin pattern bits can't do. Cook's bits were once obscure, but the secret is out and they have become hard to find at reasonable prices. They have apparently become popular among chairmakers for their ability to bore angled holed cleanly. This is a set of six in a hinged wooden box. The six bits are all in excellent condition- straight and fully clean with nice lead screws and good spurs. The sizes included are 4,6,7,10, 11, and 13. There are some odd sizes here, but they all match, and all have the "Patent Extended " stamp on the shank. It's a rare boxed set of these bits, all in excellent working order.

Millers Falls No. 97 Ultimate Breast Drill..
If I had to pick a favorite manufactured old tool, it would probably be the Millers Falls No. 97. It’s the most over-engineered, gizmo-laden boring tool ever created. It’s truly an engineering marvel. The drill has five drive modes, selected by turning an adjuster between the gears.Plain, Right and Left Hand Ratchet modes are straight-forward. The real beauty is in the “continuous motion” modes, described as Left Hand Onward and Right hand Onward. In these modes the chuck moves in one direction regardless of what direction the handle is turned.- really useful when you are drilling in a corner or other restricted area.To top it all off, the drill speed in any of these modes can be changed from fast to slow (about 1:1 to 1:3) by the simple manipulation of an adjuster on the crank arm. It’s just cool stuff. All of that functionality is packed into a heavy-duty frame with adjustable ball bearings. It has a two-piece breast plate. The larger plate can be removed to allow it to be used one-h

All five of the modes work perfectly- plain, RH Ratchet, LH Ratchet, RH Double, and Lock. The hollow handle is detachable to store bits inside. the gear action is perfectly smooth and there is no play at all along the drive shaft. The side handle is present. The two-jaw chuck works perfectly. It has a slot for gripping round bits, but will work better with tapered square shank bits. I can supply a number of square shank twist bits with it if you'd like. One interesting thing to note is that the transmission is marked model no. 1540 while the handle is marked 1545. The 1545 is essentially the same drill but with a three-jaw chuck. It looks original so maybe there was a mix-up at

Most Unusual I. SYM "Slanted" Astragal Molding Plane .
I've had this plane for a while, determined to figure out what it was used for. I can find no reference to it anywhere in any of my references, The plane cuts a pretty standard 1/4in astragal. The odd thing is that the plane cuts that astragal while held at about a 45 degree angle to the work. This would allow the plane to reach into awkward places and cut the astragal . I have no idea what sort of work would call for this operation. The plane appears completely original and unaltered, with the exception of a couple of holes in the sole, evidence of a fence being attached at some point. The blade is ground to match the sole profile. It's an early plane dating to the late 18th to early 19th century. It's in excellent condition all around with no damage and only minor wear. It's an oddball for sure.

The plane has been nicely restored to full working order. Both the blade and nicker were replaced with tempered tool steel. Both are sharp and ready to work. Marples Wedge-Arm Plow with Ivory Scales for Restoration.
This plane was made by Joseph Marples in Sheffield. It's a classic British wedge-arm plow with two exceptions- it has the fancy double locking depth adjuster, and the arms are inlaid with ivory scales. The ivory scales in the arms are a bit grungy, but still bright white. It's a pretty plane that deserves a proper restoration.

All of the teeth and rakers are complete and free of chips or damage. It needs to be sharpened, but no major tooth work will be needed. From the USFS Guide to Crosscut Saws: "[The perforated lance tooth] pattern is considered a general utility pattern that can cut all but hard and frozen wood. It consists of groups of four cutters set alternately separated by an unset raker with gullets on each side. The "bridges" between the teeth form the perforations that give the pattern its name. These bridges strengthen the teeth and reduce chatter when the saw is used to cut harder wood. The perforated lance tooth pattern is sometimes called the racer pattern and old-timers called it the four-toot

This frame saw has oak arms and stretcher and a wide 1 1/2in blade. I didn't think much of it at firs,t but the tensioning mechanism caught my attention so I decided to try it out. Massive British Steel-Soled Wooden Smooth Plane.
I've seen several planes like this one made by C. Nurse. This one is marked EA Smith at the toe. It has a thick steel plate in front of the mouth. The blade is a thick 2 1/4in wide parallel iron by Marples. It's the same type of blade you'd find in an infill, appropriate considering the mass of this plane. It weighs in at about 5lbs. The body has some wear, and a nice overall patina. There is an old, perfectly repaired check in the left cheek. It's solid and I can't make it move at all- I'm not concerned with it impacting use at all. The blade has a perfectly clean, lapped back. It should be a great smoother to put to work.

Nothing will stand in the way of this plane. The body is in excellent condition and the closed tote has no damage at all. The wood has a lovely feel to it. The steel sole slides easily and the plane works extremely well as-is. I gave it an extended test drive to prove this, enjoying the mass and momentum it develops. You can skip your daily push-ups after after a session with this plane. There is an old repaired crack to the right ear of the mortise, but it's well-repaired and the wedge fits perfectly. This is a 22in fore or jointer plane with a 2 1/2in wide double iron. It's a jointer plane by metallic plane standards, but 22in is more of a fore plane in terms of wooden planes. Excellent Adjustable Wooden Compass Plane.
This plane is in excellent condition with hardly a scratch on it. The plane has a curved sole and a dovetailed depth stop at the toe which regulates the radius the plane cuts. The depth stop is just dovetailed to the plane body, but the joint it so well done it's very hard to alter the stop's position, save with light hammer blows. It's a masterful example of the sliding dovetail. The plane has a likewise perfect 2in wide double iron made by Hearnshaw of Sheffield. As shown in the photos the back of the blade is perfectly clean without a speck of pitting. It's a gorgeous example, and a completely usable plane.
