Ken Roberts: Wooden Planes in 19th Century America Volumes 1&2
$140 New Item This Week
These are among the most important books published on the history of American planemaking. They go into exquisite detail on the wooden plane making industry in the 19th century, focusing specifically on the H. Chapin company. Roberts bought out the remnants of the Chapin factory and documented many of the tools, jigs, and fixtures used by planemakers. There are photos of clamps and work holding devices specific to planemakers that are documented nowhere else. Both books are in very good condition with only wear to the dust jackets. Volume 1 is the expanded second edition. These were printed in a fairly limited run and are getting especially hard to find nowadays. $140

C.E. Jennings 1913 Catalog Reprint
$20
This is a fascinating catalog to have in your library- C.E. Very good condition. $20
Fascinating Feron & Co. Catalog Reprint
$20
This is a fascinating MWTCA catalog reprint from the Feron & Co., a tool maker based in Paris, France from the mid-1800s to the mid 20th century. It is not dated but the research inside indicates it dates to around 1927. What is fascinating is the fact that some of the tools included within would appear at home in a shop from the last 18th century. All of the planes are wooden, as are the clamps, layout tools, etc. There are barely any handsaws. It looks like the pages from Diderot , Roubou, or Mercer, not a catalog from the mid-20th century. Each page has an English translation. It is in excellent condition and will make an interesting reference. $20

1925 United Hardware & Tool Company Catalog Reprint
$10 Recently Reduced Price
80 pages, softcover, excellent condition. This is a somewhat important reference as United Hardware and Tool was a major reseller in the early 20th century. They sold many tools under the "Fulton" name brand. This brand is frequently associated with Sears but this catalog suggests at least some of these tools were sold by United instead. They sold a full line of tools of all sorts including many German wooden planes sold under the Columbia brand name. It's a somewhat hard catalog to find today, and very useful. $10

1895 National Saw Company Catalog Reprint
$24
This is one of the most important saw references ever published. It includes the only known catalogs of Richardson, H.W. Peace, and Woodrough and McParlin. It also includes Wheeler Madden and Clemson's full line of saws. Circa 1890, the National Saw Company was formed and absorbed all four of these sawmakers and was eventually integrated with Disston, though the exact history is unknown to me. If you are interested in the history of handsaws this is a must-have. $24
